Not willing to wait for the amazing $1 sale [yes- REALLY just one dollar!], I picked up a red pair for just under $4 at my local Old Navy to road test them.

Lisa Perry: The Bi-Annual Sample Sale

I first visited Lisa Perry’s store in September during Fashion’s Night Out; it was love at first sight. Lisa’s Madison Avenue store is a like a very cool apartment you want to spend the day in so you can look at all the coffee table books, study the Roy Lichtenstein prints on the wall and try on each and every one of the colorful Sixties’ style dresses hanging on the fixtures.

The Interior of Lisa Perry’s Madison Avenue Store

I chatted with Lisa Perry herself about the Limited Edition PanAm bags she’d designed for FNO and communed about our shared love for this legendary time in history, when flying was a glamorous experience.

Here’s your chance to catch a bit of that Sixties’ magic Lisa Perry serves up. She’s having an incredible sample sale that you can’t afford to miss out on.

Below, the details and a few images to tantalize you. See you there!

Aqua Di Parma Colonia

“What’s old is new again.” Surely, you’ve heard this old saying.

Aqua di Parma Colonia

I recently discovered a bottle of Aqua di Parma Colonia pushed back behind a bunch of samples on a Van Cleef & Arpels tray on the small table at the top of the stairs while doing some spring cleaning. I dabbed some on my wrists thinking that the fresh scent would help offset the brutally hot and humid temperature. The fresh citrusy scent was  the antidote to the debilitating humidity.

Intrigued by what I assumed was a storied backstory, I consulted with a fragrance expert to learn more about this classic fragrance. I called up Cafleurebon’s Managing Editor and Fragrance Critic, Mark Behnke, to get his take on Aqua di Parma.

Mark’s voice rang with enthusiasm over the phone.

“The cologna dates back to the early 1920′s. In the 1990′s they revived the brand and have really reinvented themselves over the course of the last 10 years. Il Porfumo is one of the best 10 women’s lines out there.”

Great! Time to add on to my Aqua di Parma collection. I put a stop at MiNNY, a wonderful old world style apothecary in Soho, on my list to check if they had any body cream or shower gel in stock or maybe something else…

A week later -

After a blissful hour wandering into the shops on Mott Street in Manhattan’s Little Italy, stopping her and there to watch handsome Italian waiters set the outdoor tables for dinner, I ended my journey  as planned, at MiNNY.  Despite being located in New York, where purportedly, no one has any patience, the MiNNY shopping experience is entirely different. Once inside, you have the sensation of being transported back to a slower, statelier time, perhaps the early Sixties, when walking into your favorite boutique meant being assisted by welcoming knowledgeable staff you got to know by name and who in turn, remembered you and your preferences. It truly lives up to its claim of providing bespoke service.

MiN New York Apothecary

Mindy wasn’t there [I'm crazy about her pinterest - Godolcevita] but Holly was. She was as always, incredibly helpful. I selected a scented  Aqua di Parma Deodorant stick. This is a wonderful item to have on a fragrance line, as it is an extremely practical one and tends to be on the lower end of the price scale.  I sometimes forget to apply fragrance in the morning. There’s no chance though, of forgetting to brush one’s teeth and to applying deodorant, first thing in the morning, after rolling out of bed.

Holly sent me off with some more colognes to sample this summer, including two from Czech & SpeakE of Jermyn Street London: No.88 Cologne and Neroli Cologne. I’m still in my Aqua Di Parma phase, but am keeping an open mind and look forward to discovering exciting new fragrances at MiNNY.

Endnotes: Now is a wonderful time to visit MiN New York as they’re  having their summer sale! If you can’t make it to the actual apothecary at  have a look at what’s in stock online at MiN New York.

Laura Mercier Bridal Beauty Twitter Chat: Wednesday 6/20

Introduction, Vivian Kelly

You’re Invited…

The bridal season is upon us. You’ve got the dress, but remember what style expert Yann Varin said, “The details are extremely important to creating a perfect look.” To refresh, those details are: the shoe, the bag, hair accessories, hair and MAKEUP.

You will probably do a trial run with your hair and makeup artists before the wedding, but here’s a unique opportunity to confer with some of the best beauty talent in the business. Gather some additional inspiration and to get your most pressing makeup questions answered by one of Laura Mercier‘s top artists, Pamela Massi. You’ll love her beauty philosphy: “One of my primary goals is to create makeup friendly techniques for women on-the-go to look and feel beautiful in just a few easy steps.”

Pamela Massi, Laura Mercier MakeUp Artist

YOUR INVITATION

Join @LauraMercier & Pamela Massi for a Bridal Beauty twitter chat on 6/20 at 1:00 pm EST.

To help  brides and bridesmaids, Laura’s planned a live Bridal Beauty twitter chat on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 at 1:00 pm EST with Laura Mercier makeup artist and bridal beauty expert Pamela Massi.

ABOUT PAMELA MASSI

Pamela has been doing bridal beauty for 13 years and has been recognized by InStyle as the Best Makeup Artist in Dallas in the Beauty Black Book.  Even better, she’s a recent bride herself! Her strategy for bridal makeup is to “pull the natural beauty out of each individual and allow brides to look like themselves, but enhanced.”

Tell bridesmaids and all your  friends about the event with this tweet, or tune in with your own questions!

Below, two essential items Pamela and Laura recommend everyone should have:

·         Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation: Every bride deserves to have flawless skin on their wedding day. This recently launched foundation visibly minimizes the appearance of pores for smoother skin, providing the ultimate coverage and a soft matte finish.  $42.00, lauramercier.com

·         Laura Mercier Water Proof Mascara: This mascara won’t smudge, run, or smear and will leave the bride with long, luscious lashes even after all the water-works.  Permanent product, $20.00, lauramercier.com

Another great product that’s great for brides and bridesmaids and that you’ll use long after the wedding is Laura’s top rated Lip Glace. “Orange Tulip” is a color that would work well as a neutral but still has a little bit of a kick to it.

A Chat With Photo Legend Albert Watson

PART II: New York High School of Fashion Industries Show, Honoring Terron Schaeffer, reported for The Fashion List

One of the evening’s highlights at the High School of Fashion Industries Show was the unique opportunity to speak with Albert Watson, one on one before the show began. Mr. Watson is one of the 20 most important fashion photographers of all time. You may have seen his work in Time, Rolling Stone or Vibe and not realized that these very different subjects were all photographed by the same man.

Christy Turlington 1990

In addition to shooting the world’s most famous supermodels for Vogue [he has over 250 Vogue covers], Mr. Watson has photographed rock legend Keith Richards, film director Alfred Hitchcock and served as the official Royal Photographer for Prince Andrew’s wedding to Sarah Ferguson.

Despite his A-list credentials, Mr. Watson is pleasant and generous with his time as some of the most influential people we’ve met who are secure in their talent and experience. Although his days of starting out in the business are long behind him, Mr. Watson recounted his formative years in LA as if they were recent history. In our interview, he stressed the importance of attention to detail and of knowing one’s fashion history as necessary tools for aspiring fashion designers. An obsession for fashion he said is also absolutely necessary as fashion is a highly competitive business. “Passion, he states, should not be swept under the rug. It is a driving force.”

Motel Phoenix 1990

These days, he told us, he splits his work between graphics and film, and has published three books of his work that show a fascinating mix of vastly diverse subjects, that range from Royalty to Vegas strippers. Some of his most interesting work is found in these personal projects, compilations of photographs he took on his travels, published in three books, “Cyclops” (1994), “Maroc” (1998) and “Shot in Vegas” (1997).

Mr. Watson is an upbeat voice that stands apart from the crowd of doomsayers who bemoan how difficult it is to break into fashion these days. “Fashion is in a bit of a lull. There’s an opportunity for a new designer to come along with something that’s new.”

Ed Kavishe At Work

ON THE RUNWAY ALL THE TIME…….whether it’s a show or an airport…

I’ve blogged about Ed Kavishe before. We met years back, at the Mercedes-Benz Green Fashion Week shows when he showed me how to  fix a technical problem I was having in the Press Room.

At the time, he was in the early stages of developing his company, FWP [Fashion Wire Press]. Fashion Wire Press (FWP) is an online media company that licenses and distributes fashion week photos and video from the world’s premiere Fashion Events. I joined for a small fee and in return, had access to a few runway shots from each collection, which was great as it took the pressure off my having to try to take the shots of models walking quickly down the runway as I was simultaneously trying to write up the collection review on my laptop.

Ed’s “About Me” sums up this quirky fashion friend better than I can -

I guess i’m tumbling because everyone is doing it.

I love to travel 14 hour flights

I love to cook

I love Miami

I love Manchester United

I love Manhattan

I love Ferragamo Shoes

I love Mosley Tribes Sunglasses

I love Zegna small leather goods

Las Vegas is my playgroud

I take photos….lots of them

I will entertain you, please check back for the latest posts.

Enjoy our homage to Ed and his work. I’ve chosen 30 of his images and put them to Carson Martabano’s sound track titled, “Whammy Pedal”.
