The Victoria’s Secret Supermodels –  Modern Day Amazons, Putting the Glamour Back In Modeling

Stephanie Seymour in-V-magazine Sports Issue

This post was inspired by a variety of sources.

First, came a conversation with hair color guru, Anthony Palermo. While I sat in his salon chair at ALS, he showed me an image of Supermodel Stephanie Seymour in the current issue of V Magazine. This Forty-something year old Super’s bod is as hot as it was in her glory days when she was hanging with Axl Rose and Guns N Roses. Years later, her face is still beautiful and compelling.  She and powerful glamazons [ Stephanie, Giselle Bundchen,  Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel] evoke the same reaction – stunned  admiration.

ALL  of the above, by the way, were or still are Victoria’s Secret Angels.

I’m not the only one who wants to see supermodels who are larger than life. On my way out, Anthony recommended I check out a site he follows called,  The Little Squares, which ran  an op-ed piece called, We Still Love Magazines, which led me to The Business of Fashion. This article, about legendary French Vogue editor Franceline Prat spoke to me. It talks about the magic of fashion, which is created by talented editors, stylists, photographers, hair and makeup and great models. Only the very best of models are candidates for the title “supermodel“.

For those of you who wonder what I mean by “supermodel”, here is some clarification. In the late Eighties and Nineties, the “Supermodel” was born. She was unlike anything fashion had ever seen or experienced. The original Supers were the models who the late Gianni Versace chose for his sexy runway extravaganzas. There was nothing like a Versace show in terms of flash, excitement and high octane sex.

In the mid-nineties,  Tom Ford celebrated the strong woman while he was Gucci’s Creative Director. The difference was that Tom’s Gucci sirens looked cold and domineering, not unlike photographer Helmut Newton’s Amazonian beauties.

By contrast Gianni’s girls on the runway and in his ads looked, happy, full of life and invincible. They were the idealized living walking breathing “ultimate woman”. Women wanted to BE them, and men wanted to date them.

Then came grunge and  minimalism and a toned-down attitude which included a major directional shift to  the skinny/skeletal women-girls who walk today’s runways, despondent, knowing that the real plums [magazine covers, the best beauty and fashion campaigns] of the biz go to celebrities. Who can blame them for being bummed out?

Really though, is this what we really want to see and idealize? So many editors have leaned over and said to me during countless shows, “Where’s the excitement? That girl’s shoulders’ knees, [fill in the body part] stick out too much. It’s distracting me from the clothes.”

The Victoria’s Secret Angels have restored my faith in the “Supermodel”. She IS indeed alive and well. If you’ve any doubts whatsoever, have a look at the slide show below.

Enjoy!

Victoria’s Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel: Part 1

Text and Video, Vivian Kelly

The Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Tour was as well organized as a military operation. As a blogger, I waited with the other bloggers invited, perched on a ledge,  two yards away from VS Angels Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton. Each of us had 3 minutes with the Supermodels.

Finally, my turn. I showed Candice and the VS PR staff an image of fellow Angels Adrianna Lima and Doutzen Kroes, posing in a wonderwoman-esque shot in V Magazine’s V76 Sports Issue. Photographed by Mario Testino and styled by Nicola Formichetti, Adriana and Doutzen are sexy, powerful – a modern day version of Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman.

Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes in V Magazine. Hurrah for supermodels!

“Wow!” Candice enthused, “I want to do that”. She has – have a look at her feature also shot by Mario Testino for V Man entitled “Candice Does Copenhagen”. There are plenty of boys in the shots but it’s clear that SHE is the star.

Both shoots highlight this Super’s desire to portray women as sexy, strong and empowered. In our video, Candice says, “What I love about this [V Mag] is that they look so strong and so healthy and that’s what Victoria’s Secret really promotes. To do editorial there’s this thing that the girls have to be so skinny, but how great does THIS look?”

Watch the interview!

Tomorrow, part 2 – our homage to Candice – a slide show of her best work so far.

Victoria’s Secret Angels On Spring Break

Still Images of the Victoria’s Secret PINK party at the Shelbourne  provided by Full Picture PR

It’s that time again – SPRING BREAK! The place to be this year was Miami Beach, at the Shelbourne Hotel with Victoria’s Secret PINK models, Elsa Hosk, Chanel Iman and their co-host, Joe Jonas.

Joe Jonas: Victoria Secret PINK Spring Break Party Host!

Musician   Joe Jonas, joined models Chanel Iman and Elsa Hosk on March 14th for the ultimate pool party at The Shelborne, when the lucky party-goers [95% female??] hung out and played fun interactive games and  challenged Joe and the models in PINK themed competitions as they listened to party beats from DJ Irie.

Business was brisk at the Victoria’s Secret PINK pop-up shop, which sold limited edition gear including tanks, tee’s and shorts. In addition to scoring some limited edition pieces, some of the lucky visitors bagged some free prizes as they shopped.

For more about the party, visit http://www.justjaredjr.com/2012/03/05/joe-jonas-victoria-secret-pink-spring-break-party-host/#ixzz1owE6o19D

Beauty Tips/411: At the Victoria’s Secret PINK style-off event we recently attended, we were impressed at how much attention their new self-tanners were getting. Alison Brod PR sent us home with a few mini test jars. The results? Amazing. The new self-tanning formula is now in store [we checked today] and online AND is reasonably priced. The creme is $12. I sprayed the airbrush self-tanner on and it works! It delivers a subtle tan with one spray and you can dial it up to Ibiza tan status if you like it deep and dark.

As far as clothes – you don’t need much other than a bikini and a few PINK coverups and a great bra in an eye-popping color. VS Angel Erin Heatherton told me her favorite spring break/vacation bra is currently the Very Sexy Deep -V model in “tropical punch”. According to the sales associate I chatted with at  the 34th Street store, this model is selling out fast.

VS Self Tanner – it works!

Spring Break is alive and well, get out there and catch some rays!

Color at the Sun Jung Wan Fall 2012 Show

We’ve made it habit to be backstage at this show because we like the clothes and the designer, whose English has improved dramatically over the seasons. In a season with a distinct lack of swag, it was such a treat when Son Jung presented us with pretty tote bags in a faux snakeskin that we  started using right away. Thanks, Son Jung!

Hot pants can be problematic if your name isn’t Giselle Bundchen, but look #1 was adorable and gave us the courage to consider trying it out.

Fur is a constant at her collections but it’s used judiciously. We loved the little removable fur ankle muff that keeps you toasty inside but lets you show off your strappy sandals once you’re inside.

In our backstage interview, she discussed her uniquely Korean cultural influences. Korea has its own culture, not to be confused with those Japan has. A Japanese Geisha is very different from the Korean Gisaeng Courtesan which she referenced in her collection. The bright blues and greens added a fun modern twist to the concept.

Green is Good! Ed Says

Two big themes for this spring and fall are architectural sleek and color.

Confession – I had a heads-up on this one, from fashion friend, Ed Kavishe, Founder of Fashion Wire Press, who roams the world shooting for FWP and The Fashion List. If there’s a show in any major fashion capital, he is THERE. We met at Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week long ago; he helped me out with a laptop issue I was having in the Press Lounge. Seems like a small thing, but a little kindness goes a long way!

Ed Kavishe in Action, Shooting at the Trocadero, Paris

Ed’s also a bit of a fashion forecaster. Back in August of 2010, in response to my question about what direction fashion was going, he responded as follows:

“Mhh let see, I’m thinking the denim trend will continue, there’s gonna be lots of sheer but am thinking piled with little jackets, we’ll still see the power suit continue from fall, the minimalism trend will still be on in a more modern way with pieces constructed more like architecture. An unlike last spring where there was lots of whites, I’m saying color, lots of it….”

Was he right or what?? The above remark hit me while watching the link to Elie Saab’s fall 2012 show, Laura Schottland of Paul Wilmot Communications sent me. There it was – geometrics for day and green for evening. One of the finale dresses at Elie Saab [shown above] hit both themes without looking the least bit stark – a common pitfall  ”architectural” clothing tends to fall into.

Douglas Hannant showed green as well, in his Wallis Simpson/W.E. Film inspired fall 2012 collection. This gown was more of a poison green but the sideways triangles at the shoulders gave it that on-trend architectural feel.

Angelina Jolie was one of the first celebrities to push the color green into the limelight when she showed up at the  Golden Globes wearing an emerald green Atelier Versace dress and a pair of dime size Robert Procop emerald studs for a full-on green look.

Angelina started her green movement a year earlier, when she set the tone for how to wear serious green jewelry. People are STILL talking about how well she pulled-off a pair of whopping 115 carat Columbian emerald earrings and a patching 65 carat ring designed by Lorraine Schwartz.

For day dressing, there are some fantastic forest green pieces from Piazza Sempione that really DO fulfill the promise of “day-to-evening”.  PS Communications Director, Cristina Cavatore, took me through the fall2012 art deco inspired collection.  Here’s a sneak peek – [more on Piazza Sempione next week!]

Forest Green at the Piazza Sempione Fall 2012 Collection

I’m taking this trend in baby-steps, starting with today’s purchase of Revlon “Posh” nail polish in emerald green, a new Lilly Pulitzer iphone case in a navy and green shell print and a fun pair of green enamel studs. Next, I’ll go out on the hunt for an emerald green scarf or top. I’ve found the earrings though and so far, my top pick is the me-too pair of Angelina Jolie ~ Beverly Hills Housewives Emerald earrings by Steve Sasco Designs on Amazon.com for $64.99.

Victoria’s Secret PINK NYC Style-Off With SuperModel Elsa Hosk

Text, images, and video, by Vivian Kelly

We go to a lot of events and shows but it’s rare that we get to chill-out with the talent as their movements are carefully orchestrated by their PR and handlers. As Juliette and I arrived at the Victoria’s Secret PINK corporate offices for the pink style off, I figured my chances of actually being able to ask VSP Supermodel, Elsa Hosk, anything other than, “What’s your favorite bra this spring?” to be minimal.

Wrong!  The style-off was a blast and I discovered just how wide the VSP range was. There were great pieces of costume jewelry that ranged from an Hermes-like copper toned bangle to an impressively heavy gold toned charm bracelet. If they had these items in my local Mall VS store, there’s no doubt they’d blow-out the first day they were put out on the floor.

We had 7 minutes to style our mannequin and Alison Brod PR gave us one of their interns to assist. Elsa bopped around and offered encouragement and suggestions to all of us blogger contestants.

The contest is on until March 9th so please click HERE if you like our spring break outfit!

Afterwards, we perched on the couch, sampled pink rock candy from the all-pink candy bar and chatted with Elsa about what it’s like to be one of the most photographed models on the planet.

Below, the interview. Enjoy and please don’t forget to LIKE and have your vote counted!

Super Duckie! Duckie Brown’s Styling Tips: Get More Fashion From Your Clothes

Text and Video, Vivian Kelly

Talking to the Duckies is always a charge and I’ve never left a meeting with them without having at least one good laugh. Their droll sense of humour and candour is a rare thing these days when most people hide behind perplexing double-speak which leaves you scratching your head and thinking, “huh?”

Not so with the Duckies. I shot this video with the scottmenswear guy in mind. Going back to one of my early FE series – he’s a guy who wears CLOTHES but would like to wear SOME fashion. The Duckies design FASHION BUT Stephen has also been design director at Tommy Hilfigger, a “classic” and “safe” brand.  The Duckies share some tips [which I wrote about earlier this week] in this post, Styling Tips From Three of New York’s Top Men’s Fashion Designers , in case you missed it.

Below, is the exclusive video interview. Enjoy, laugh and keep in mind that their tips work for both men AND women.

Mary Alice Stephenson’s Adorable Picks for My Habit – Fashion Kids

Text, Vivian Kelly

There are shopping sites and there are shopping sites.

My Habit caught my eye because they had partnered with one of my favorite fashion friends, Mary Alice Stephenson, who was my Allure Magazine Market Editor back in the mid-Nineties, when I was doing PR for Michael Kors.

Since then, we’ve both added a lot to our professional and personal resumes, including having the privilege of having some really great kids in our lives. Fortunately for us both, our children love fashion as much as we do. On the way back from an insanely fun Victoria’s Secret Pink styling event, my 14 year old daughter told me how thrilled she was to have been “born into” fashion.

Mary Alice’s son, Willem, is a natural fashion super star who is also a “born into fashion” kid. He’s the inspiration for Mary Alice’s exclusive curated event on MyHabit, Amazon’s membership-only shopping destination.

Mary Alice personally selected children’s pieces for consumers who share her belief that you are never too young to put your most fashionable foot forward.

Throughout her 20-year career Mary Alice has worked at legendary fashion magazines, served as a commentator on umpteen national television shows and styled many of Hollywood’s most fashionable celebrities including, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson.

The items on the collection are classic meets cool. Time is running out, so get on there and snag what you can, pronto!

My personal fave – the lemoncello Jack Rodgers sandals – you can’t have too many pairs of these.
